Tapered Thermowell
Description:
The outer diameter gradually decreases from the base (process connection) to the tip.
Real-Life Application:
The standard for demanding processes. Ideal for high-pressure, high-velocity, and vibrating applications (pipelines, refineries, power plants).
Specification:
Offers superior mechanical strength and rigidity to resist bending from flow (vortex-induced vibration). Has a faster response time than a straight type.
Materials:
Stainless Steel (316/316L), Monel 400, Hastelloy C276, Inconel.
Straight Thermowell
Description:
The thermowell has a uniform outer diameter along its entire insertion length. This is the most basic design.
Real-Life Application:
Best for low-pressure, low-velocity processes. Commonly used in tanks, boilers, and utility lines with minimal flow.
Specification:
Offers good corrosion protection (due to thick wall) but has the lowest mechanical strength and slowest response time to temperature changes.
Materials:
Stainless Steel (304, 316), Carbon Steel, Brass, Monel.
Stepped Thermowell
Description:
Has a larger diameter at the base which “steps” down to a smaller diameter for the rest of the length, usually near the tip.
Real-Life Application:
Used when the fastest possible response time is the most critical factor. Common in process control loops and laboratory settings.
Specification:
The reduced mass at the tip allows for rapid heat transfer to the sensor. Its strength is less than a tapered well but better than a straight one.
Materials:
Primarily Stainless Steel (316, 304), as it’s often used in less corrosive, high-response applications.

Description:
